The Crystal Man

John Burchard

Obsidian

Obsidian comes in many varieties, all of which are grounding stones. They keep you in touch with the reality of the physical plane where we live. Obsidian is volcanic glass, ranging from transparent to opaque.

The most common form are the transparent nodules known as "Apache tears." I heard that the Indians believed that these nodules were the teardrops Mother Earth shed for the loss of countless lives in the stupidity of war. I also learned that Apache tears are love stones. When a person gives a tear to another, the stone puts a love binding on the receiver. Discarding or destroying the stone cannot break the binding, only returning it to the giver will do so. Along with this goes the caution that the tear should never be given without informing the receiver of the bond.

The following three types of obsidian repel negativity:
Snowflake obsidian—so called because it is black with patterns of white "snowflakes" or "flowers"—amplifies and returns negativity to the originator, if you're into revenge.
Gold sheen obsidian is black, but when light shines on it exhibits a gold sheen. It, too repels negativity, but gives it to the "Sun God" for the good of all.
Silver sheen obsidian is like the gold, but shines silver in the light. This type gives the energy to the "Moon Goddess" for the good of all.

There are other colors that shine in obsidian, but these are all pieces of what is called "rainbow obsidian." This stone acts as a cleanser and dissipates negative energy through itself to Mother Earth. I have a rainbow sphere I use in cleansing jewelry and auras.

Mahogany obsidian is a little known variety that usually forms as needles. It, too, grounds and repels negativity. This is the type that went into making arrowheads and spear points.

Fire obsidian is one of the most beautiful of the varieties. It has a flashing luminescence not unlike opal. I have found it to be a superb focusing tool.

Whatever form you choose, obsidian performs the vital functions of grounding and removing negativity. You may want to consider a piece for your collection. One of these many varieties is sure to fit your taste and pocket book.

Walk with the wisdom of the stones.

Ask the Crystal Man

Here are some general questions I often hear.

What is the best stone for love?

First, you must be very specific about what you want. For committed long term love, use rose quartz or any pink stone. For short term play love, or just sexual gratification, use ruby, garnet or any red stone.

In either case, wouldn't you also want harmony? For that, use blue lace agate, olivine, or peridot.

What is the money stone?

The true money stone is malachite. But is money all you want? Why not prosperity? In that case, try adventurine.

If you have a question for the Crystal Man, send it to him, care of New Moon Rising, 8818 Troy St., Spring Valley, CA 92077.
