To Light a Sacred Flame: Practical witchcraft For The Millennium
By Silver RavenWolf
ISBN 1567187218. Llewellyn Publications, PO Box 64383, St. Paul, MN 55164-0383 USA. $14.95.
The latest offering from the popular American witch deals with the subject of candle magic. The style is easy to read and upbeat, with a very positive aspect towards creating candle spells for all occasions in life, though if you want to know how to get revenge on all your enemies, don't bother to look in here. As with all of Silver Ravenwolf's books, To Light a Sacred Flame is detailed, entertaining and responsible. Written for today's Wiccan seeker, this book contains numerous techniques for uniting Divinity with magic, knowledge and humour. The book is not designed with any specific tradition in mind, in fact much of this book involves the modern world in no small way. I read one spell that involves putting a magically inscribed scroll in a freezer! She also includes a spell for empowering house cleaning equipment (1 might try that). That is perhaps being over simplistic. To Light A Sacred Flame is about fire magic, yes, but its main purpose is to raise the reader's consciousness towards a more spiritual existence whilst maintaining a balance in the material world. Head in the stars, maybe, but with feet firmly on the ground. As with all her books, there are more spells than you can shake a wand at, and as the name suggests, the magic involves flame -candle flame mostly. She has very interesting views on what constitutes acceptable magical practice and also on how magic works. The book is worth reading just for this aspect. There is a chapter on creating elementals that worries me slightly. I don't want lots of etheric creatures wandering around the place as they can cause problems. Again, precautions and warnings are included where relevant, but I have rather less faith in human nature than I have in human vanity and carelessness. Still, all things considered, I can see why Mama Silver as she is sometimes called, writes such popular books. Her work is positive, entertaining and most important of all, enlightening. |
