Just Doing It

To sell or not to sell has been a big turning point in our lives. While we both work on the magazine it is and always has been Scot's baby. I could not begin to publish the magazine on my own. I don't have the computer expertise Scot does. He has put this computer system together and knows his equipment and what it can do. He is the one who has developed the magazine and, I think, has done a wonderful job. Since our move to Oregon has been my first opportunity to help with more than just writing an article.

Any business, even very small, takes a lot of organization and dedication. Scot has done it all, every job it takes to get a magazine out on time. He is so multi-talented and competent yet doesn't seem to realize what a great job he has done because most of the results are intangible. Like the pebble dropped in the pond sending out rings of vibrations, he doesn't often get to know how much his work has been appreciated, or how much he has helped people. There are many ways of being successful besides just making money. Though money seems to be the big criterion for most, there is also satisfaction in a job well done. There is knowing you have created something that helps people mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The cards and letters and calls have been the occasional glimpses Scot has gotten of the help he has been to many people. I love to see his face light up when he gets a letter of appreciation. Sometimes it only takes the right word at the right time to make a difference for someone, to turn on a sorely needed light. Books, magazines and classes can do just that, especially when one is seeking. Scot has done that for a lot of people.

I guess you can tell I am very proud of Scot. I've seen the work it takes and the talent to do it. Not everyone can edit and write and do layouts and artwork to boot.

Now he wants to do more art. While I shall miss the magazine, if we do sell, it is very important that people work at what they love. Always encourage yourself and your children to go for what one is really interested in doing for a career, regardless of the monetary considerations. The money will eventually follow if you are doing what you love.

Case in point: my favorite daughter (only daughter), Veronica, wanted to train animals. Not dogs and cats, but chimps, gorillas (her favorites) exotic animals, scary animals; scary to me, anyway. She'll walk into a cage with anything. I truly admire her courage. It's her talent; what a witch! Now she has a wonderful career in the movies and commercials working with all kinds of animals. Doing what she liked really paid off, even monetarily. She makes very good money. So, who knew? I wondered sometimes if I should push (ha ha, she's an Aries) in the direction of some more usual occupation. Training exotic animals seemed farfetched as a job. Sometimes, most times, we just have to have faith in our children's choices and help them to follow through to at least give them a shot at their dreams and give ourselves a shot at our own dreams, too. We all need encouragement from time to time.

My son, Chris, didn't want to go to college right after high school. He wanted a year off in the work world first. I worried that the money he was making at the Aircraft Company would keep him from going back for more education, but it had to be his decision. Thank Goddess that after a year, he was ready for the rat race at UCSD engineering school. It was grueling, he sometimes felt like dropping out, but he didn't. He graduated this August and landed his first job, beating out a lot of competition because he had that year of hands-on experience most engineers lack. So again, who knew? Apparently the kids did on some level. Trust your children, trust yourself about what you really want, and do it! Be happy, enjoy.

Know that you are loved and guided and guarded at all times by God/Goddess/All That Is. Bright Blessings.

Blessed Be! JR
