A Helping

Hand or Magickal Hand

By Susan Baxter of Starwood

This little charm is easy and cute and non-Pagans won't even guess what it is! You will need felt, embroidery thread, herbs, stones and whatever else suits you: such as pink felt and thread, rose petals and rose quartz for a love charm; green felt, gold thread, a penny, a green stone and nutmeg for a money charm; red felt for power, strength, heat; white for protection, etc. You can embroider a symbol, rune or such on your helping hand, too.

Cut two mitten shapes of felt. Light a candle and incense that is right for your need and ask your deity to aid you in making your charm. Embroider your symbols. Overcast the two mittens together except for the top. Fill the mitten with herbs, stones, etc. and stitch the top closed. Sew a little loop of narrow ribbon at the corner.

It is best to begin work on the New Moon. When you are done, put your helping hand on your altar for nine days. Each day burn a matching candle beside it for nine minutes while meditating on its purpose. Anoint your helping hand with the appropriate oil (very lightly).

Keep the hand on your person at all times until Full Moon, then bury or burn it, give thanks and leave an offering of food or a coin outside.

There are many different kinds of helping hands you can make. For instance, you can make protection hands for children to carry at all times. Put the hands in their rooms, coats, etc.
