The Crystal Man

John Burchard

Hematite

First I'd like to clarify a point that was recently brought to my attention. So you won't be confused, let me make it clear that I use the terms "crystals," "gems" and "stones" interchangeably. Hematite is an example of a stone that does not fit the geological definition of a crystal.

Hematite is a form of iron hydroxide, iron silicate and silicate, commonly known as iron agate. It is very heavy and quite hard (6.5), making it suitable for ornaments and jewelry. Hematite usually comes in two colors: red, which is fairly rare and shiny gray, which resembles highly polished pewter.

The gray is "specular hematite." It has recently become very popular and is well known for its metallic luster. Over the years it has gained a reputation as a success stone. Supposedly, those who wear it will achieve rapid business promotions.

Hematite is also considered to be one of the best grounding stones in the world. Our Native American cousins have long believed that this stone has a dual nature. They often referred to it as the "stone of comfort" and the "stone of woe." One aspect promotes peace and harmony if the owner is mild mannered and even-tempered. The other aspect promotes unrest and violence if the owner is ill mannered and excitable.

In addition, hematite seems to be universally accepted as one of the foremost healers of surface or skin wounds. It inhibits scarring when rubbed on a wound daily.

Walk with the wisdom of the stones.

Ask the Crystal Man

What stone would be good for working with a 19-year-old suicidal male?

In addition to professional help, I would suggest several:

Blue Lace Agate— for calming

Rose Quartz— for emotional healing

Fluorite— for emotional balance

Moss Agate— for mental balance

Why are hematite phantoms pink?

The pink phantoms are quartz enclosed red hematite. It would be rare to find a phantom of specular hematite.

What is the best kind of stone to hold while meditating?

This is very difficult to answer because it can change at each meditation and for each person. For example, if I'm meditating at the ocean, I like to use blue lace agate. In my yard or the woods, I like clear quartz. In my bed, I like rose quartz. My advice is, find a comfortable stone and give it a try.

If you have a question for the Crystal Man, you can address it to him care of the Rose and Quill.
