Chain Letters A year ago it seemed I was receiving a chain letter nearly every month. After I'd wadded up the first two or three, I began doing a short ritual—ripping the letter into small pieces and burning it in my cauldron. However they're worded, whatever `good' intentions may be behind them, all chain letters are roots of negative magick. Those who perpetuate them by sending five or ten or twenty copies are guilty of further negativity. Harsh words? Not under the circumstances. Look closely at any chain letter. Typically, they wish you `good luck' and money and may even include a reference to God or Jesus. They relate stories of the wonderful things that happened to others who passed on the chain—and the tragedies of those who broke it. Receiving a chain letter is a sign that someone else—probably someone you know—swallows this garbage and is afraid to free themselves of it. Also, this person believes you're unhappy with your life—that you need luck. Luck is what we make it. No one else can give it to us. We certainly can't receive it from a piece of paper with black ink melted onto it by modern photocopying methods. However, we can allow other persons and things—such as chain letters—to gain control of our lives. All we have to do is let them in. Most chain letters are also subtly demanding to women. Don't believe me? Read one closely sometime. Do chain letters carry negative, threatening psychic energy to those who receive them? Probably not. However, even passing these things from one hand to another—even photocopies—can leave an imprint of a desperate, fearful energy. The aim of this article is to halt the spread of chain letters among our community. The next time you receive a chain letter, burn it. Destroy it. Obliterate this evidence of the ignorance of others; crush the chain beneath your feet. Don't be sucked in by the fear; don't let some nameless person's sadistic literary output control you. We are individuals. We have the power to shape our lives as we desire. Chain letters are just that—chains. They are shackles ready to hold us back. The only power they have to bless or cure us is that which we give them. If you receive a chain letter from a person you know, tell them what you think of the whole business. Pity the poor people who send out chain letters. Pity their ignorance. Hope that they'll find the strength to take control of their lives. Perhaps someday we'll see the end of chain letters. Until then, we can do our part in stopping them. If you think that I'm crazy for writing about this topic, think about it for a minute: Every chain letter is a veiled psychic attack. As individuals expanding our consciousness in today's world, we cannot let them invade our lives. 1989 by Scott Cunningham. All Rights Reserved. |
