The Other Editorial
By Scot Rhoads
It's hard to believe I made it through the first issue. It's equally hard to believe that it's time for the next one. I want to thank everyone who help with this issue, but that would be kind of boring. (Never the less, I have to give special mention to Don Kraig, Scott Cunningham and Cecil MacPeakes.) If anyone out there would like the thrill of receiving such accolades in the next issue, let us know. We are still only offering trade and/or thanks at this point (until we start to break evenand our new prices are a necessary step in that direction), but let me tell you, getting your stuff published in an international magazine is an unparalleled thrill. Yes, we are international! Majo-No-Ie will be carrying the Rose & Quill in Japan. We are also with a distributor in the LA area and we may start with a national distributor with this issue. We were rather surprised at the magnitude of the reaction to the Rose & Quill. We sold out just a couple of weeks into the cover date. It looks like we have a going concern! Since we have been catapulted into the `New Wage,' we have begun to sell out in other ways. Well, maybe not `sell out'but we did decide to dilute our cover a bit. We're now a Journal of Magick and Wicca. As you can see in the article Why Witch, I see advantages to either choice. Originally, I just liked Witchcraft better. Since printing our first issue, however, I've been concerned about the share of the market we might turn away, and for our readers who may have problems with casual exposureresulting in lost friends, alienated in-laws and unfriendly postal personnel, for instance. These are rather lame reasons, but it doesn't take much to overcome the reasons for keeping the old title. As far as I'm concerned, the best time to use Witchcraft is when you want to draw attention in order to educate. This works (when it works at all) with friendly media publicity, for instance. If you're selling something, the only people that you will attract with Witchcraft are those you'd attract just as easily with Wicca and those you don't want to attract. Or at least that's what I think. Whatever. As long as we get to more people who want our magazine, I'm happy.
I would like the Rose & Quill to be a forum for philosophical debate and exploration. The more people that participate, the more successful this will be. At this point, we haven't had a whole lot of participation because we're so new. Also, our production schedule means that people have only just begun to receive the magazine as of this writing. But in the future, I hope that anyone who sees an idea that sparks something within him will write us a letter or an article or maybe even draw a picture. Education is a laudable goal for a magazine such as this one, but our subject is so nebulous and individual that the most effective (and I feel most interesting) approach is to share as many ideas as possible. Won't you please share your own ideas with all of us?
Of those who have reacted, some of them have commented on the numerological significance of my using the Middle French spelling of `premier' on the cover of our first issue (oops! Right). I want to thank those of you who did not commentI am forever in your debt (that means I won't pay you back, but I still thank you). I also want to thank the many people who told us how much they liked the first issue (blush)especially those who ordered subscriptions. Anyone who wants to add his 2 (or $13) can write to us care of:
