The Metaphysics of the Gulf War
Lazaris
More than any other crisis in your world in its recent history, the War in the Persian Gulf is a metaphysical problem that manifested itself politically and economically, and then as war, with its tragic loss of human life. The war is an outward manifestation of several inner crises. You can see these crises personally and answer them within yourself; you don't have to create them internationally. Then there will be resolutionnot compromise, complacency and selloutbut real solution to the crisis in the Middle East.
Inner Crises:
1) The Crisis of the Bully. Many will debate whether Saddam Hussein is insane or a brilliant military manipulator, but all will agree that he is a bully who wants to control territory by force. He is like any playground bully, except for the power of the toys he is willing to use: chemical and biological as well as conventional weaponry.
The issue for each individual becomes: Who is the bully inside me? I want to grow, evolve, and create wonderful positive realities, but there's a part of me that stubbornly, blindly says no. Who is that? Is it martyrhood, self-pity, the need to control people, the desire to show them the damage that was done to me? Is it righteousness or blame?" You look at the bully inside you so you don't need to create a bully out in the world.
2) The Crisis of the Negative Ego. In Saddam you have a man who is saying: I will not be humiliated; I'll destroy the world before I'll be humiliated. Now those are the words, clearly of a negative ego. On the other hand, you also had a worldwide press saying that George Bush had to go to war or he would look like a wimp. During his presidential campaign he felt he had to prove to the world he was no wimp.
So what you need to ask yourself as individuals, as a nation, and as a world is: How do I deal with my negative ego?" Some attempt to out-bully the bully, to destroy the negative ego. For those perhaps the only solution is war. Others look the other way, pretending they don't have a bully or negative ego. The global solutions will follow the personal ones. As you get off the game board" with your inner bully and learn to master your negative ego, you can find a personal solutionand a global one that is responsible.
3) The Crisis of Power. All around this War is the issue of oilsource and symbol of the power of the Western, industrialized world. Iraq threatened to pull the plug on that power.
Look at yourself and ask: What are my sources of power? What's my fuel of power? Where do I threaten to pull my own plug? What parts of me are threatening not to let my power be my own?"
4) The Crisis of Character. Characterhuman character, individual character, and the character of a nationis determined by the ideals that are held. Ideals are those desires one seeks knowing: I'll never fully reach it, but I'm a better person for trying." There are ideals of love, truth, honesty, healing and of lifting to the highest level of consciousness. There are ideals of human dignity and value, human freedom and self-determination. To those ideals you attach principles, the guidelines by which you live. You have principles, but it's the adherence to them that creates character. If you have a principle of always telling the truth, except you never do it when it's inconvenient, than you lack character.
The ideals of the West deal with human rights and freedoms, the rights of individuals to choose and to govern themselves. And you have made a commitment to defend such rights whenever they are challenged. Many are saying you are in Saudi Arabia and defending Kuwait for those ideals, and that's simply not so. Those are not countries that honor human rights, freedoms, or the same human dignity (especially for women) that you do. They don't allow free government, free choice, or free speech. To say you are there to defend democracy and human rights is simply not true. You have ideals and principles, but you are not adhering to them. What results is a Crisis of Character.
We are not saying that you should not be there. Indeed, the world situation is such that you must be there. We are saying that being there for the wrong reasons is a Crisis of Character. Being there for the right reasons is a resolution of that crisis.
5) The Crisis of Optimistic Success. Everyone has the capacity to be happy and have fun. Many of you, however, are terrified of having happiness and fun together, and particularly afraid of having them continuously. It may be fine to be happy for a day or two, but if it's been a week or two, you're pushing the envelope. You become afraid that any moment something dreadful will happen. You fear what we call The Mysterious Tragedythe assumption that when everything is wonderful, something totally unexpected and terribly tragic will happen. People assume that if you're too happy for too long The Mysterious Tragedy will occur and take it all away from you.
As you entered 1990, what did you have? In Eastern Europe nation after nation became free. Mandela was released. There were free elections in Central America. The Soviet Union was virtually in alliance with the West. What you had was unprecedented - unprecedented happiness, continuous fun.
Then one day in August: Poof! It was taken away by a madman in the Middle East who had biological and chemical weapons and an army of a million troops. As a humanity, you played out the myth of The Mysterious Tragedy to the point of war. These are the Crises, but as you work with and resolve them within yourselvesand as you remember that you are creating this reality and that you have the power to change ityou can create a world in which the harm this war does can be far less than it might otherwise have been. You can create real and positive resolution. And you can create a bright and beautiful future. As we have said, this year, 1991: The Year of Exploration, can be a very tough year. But the very flux that makes it potentially so difficult also creates the possibility of truly miraculous successes that you, as the MapMakers you are, can create.
For as long as there is light, we shall love you.
With love and peace. Lazaris
