New Moon Rising, A Journal of Pagan Thought & Magick

Submission Guidelines

New Moon Rising is a journal of pagan thought and magick, begun in 1989 and committed to being a vital international stimulus in the continuing Pagan & Magickal Renaissance as an intelligent forum on Magick, Pagan culture, history and practice.  NMR aligns with no particular school or tradition.  It seeks to explore all within their paradigms.  It is published in print 6 times a year.

Articles Actively Sought

We continue to explore and request articles and artwork in such varied subjects as: magickal theory and practice, grimoires, world  mystery traditions, pagan pantheons both western and eastern, book, media & product reviews, biographies, classical paganism, neo-paganism, ceremonial magick in all its aspects, chaos magic, druidry, shamanism, totems, folklore, voodoo, santeria, African Traditional Religions, alchemy, thelema, setianism, rituals, witchcraft, poetry, fiction and a variety of other mind-provoking and related subjects.

We welcome material never before published as well as previously published material.  We also welcome book extracts.

Length

Articles can be from 1000 – 7,500 words (give or take).  A regular series of articles on a theme to run through several editions will also be considered.

Editing

We reserve the right to edit your work for reasons of clarity, style, editorial policy, and sometimes (rarely) for space. You can avoid a lot of editing by following these suggestions:

  • Break up long sentences (try reading your piece out loud to identify unwieldy sentences).
  • Remove passive voice.
  • Use standard grammar and formatting (refer to any book on style for the basics)
  • Pass your piece by someone else (a bibliophile, perhaps) for comments before you submit it.
  • Try to avoid against rants against living people, but we don't mind rattling some cages in a friendly way — there are no sacred cows.

If you're concerned about the editing we might do, please request a proof copy before printing. If this is the case, make sure your submission is turned in well before the deadline (above).

References

A bibliography is linked numerically to in text notes. When there are no in text notes you may supply several references for additional reading if the article lends itself to further reading. Citations should be as complete as possible and should include:

Author's Last Name, First Name, Title of Article or Book, Title of Periodical where applicable. Location of publisher, publisher, date of publication, volume, issue, and page numbers when the citation refers to an article within a larger work or periodical.  For internet references cited the complete url and the date accessed.

Callouts (Pull Quotes)

If you feel that one or two lines of the article might lend themselves to a "callout," you are welcome to indicate this by placing the appropriate sentences in quotation marks at the end of the text. The editor reserves the right to make final decisions regarding callouts.

Subheadings

We encourage the use of subheadings, especially for longer articles. Please make your subheads bold and capitalized.

Artwork

If you have specific ideas about art work to be used with your piece please be specific and we will consider your request.

Format and mechanics

For all pieces, submit via email to the editor as a MS Word or RTF file attachment.   Please be sure you name and address appear on all pages and in all files. Please start the file name with your last name in capital letters.
